Getting Started with CommentsPlus

As you know, we released a new cross-module & highlight comments solution based on DotNetNuke platform a while ago. We hope to build a universal comments/voting system to be integrated with across multiple different modules on a dnn site. And this awesome module was announced as "Comments+". You may be interested in what sets Comments+ apart from other DNN comment modules, please visit the post Ultra DNN Comments System - CommentsPlus in details. Today we would like to show you how to get started with CommentsPlus. Until now, this module allows you to add the popular comments engine Disqus or Facebook in any page of your DotNetNuke website. So the tutorial will cover Disqus & Facebook section:

Disqus Comments System

Disqus is a comments platform that helps easily you build a networked community for your website. And Comments+ integrated with Disqus comment system seamlessly and included all the benefits from Disqus service - http://disqus.com/features/, such as Threaded comments, Blacklists and whitelists, Notification, Inline media embedding…. LOTs of features. Before going any further, you will need to register your website with Disqus. You will also need to create a user profile in order to login and administer this website. During registration, you will pick a shortname for your Comments+ module, which is how Disqus identifies your website community in the system. Then in order to active Disqus comments, just go through the simple process below:

1) Head over to Disqus.com to login with your account.

2) (Optional) Visit the Application section - http://disqus.com/api/applications/ and register your new application for calling APIs. It will be mentioned in detail later steps.

3) Login with host account of your dnn website and add a new CommentsPlus module into your destination page.

4) Enter the configure panel with the left-top action menu of current comments+ module.

5) Complete the settings with checking the option [Comment type] as "Disqus". Actually those options are so self-explained and easily configured. See the screenshots as follows and some notes below:

Note that:

Application public Key: it is "Public Key" generated by the application in the steps 2) and just required when you will not use the "University way".

Identifier key: It is part of the thread identifier key and will append to the "Identifier prefix" in the Disqus thread. In common letting it blank is all right. Meanwhile, it is more useful to integrate Comments+ with other 3rd party modules, for example, when integrating dnn core blog module you can fill in the query parameter "entryid" as the Identifier key, it will check out the query parameter in the load process. If not exist, the comment system will not show. So just visiting the post detail, the comments+ will work as expected.

6) Click "Update" to save the settings.

Congratulations. Now the Disqus comments system will work like a charm. :)

Facebook Comments System

To be completed. Please stay tune.

(Just supported Disqus comments now)

Alternative Facebook comments system.

Road map

Generic comment system for DotNetNuke platform

Sync comments in the background so that it will populate them in the local quickly

More & more

How it Action

Buzz with CommentsPlus Module

Buzz with Facebook Comments+

Buzz in Social DNN - dnnwave.com

With comments+, it has great potential to add a much higher level of interaction with your website visitors and yourself, as well as being able to aggregate all of your visitors activity in one spot, not to mention your own. One killing feature is that all comments is SEO-friendly and are able to be indexed by Search Engine quickly.

BTW, as you noticed, it was implemented as one widget module for our core product - Ultimate DNN Blog Module SunBlogNuke. So if you are our clients of SunBlogNuke, including Professional license & Enterprise license, comments+ is free to access in the extension page of our website. If you are not now please feel free to join our community and will be surprised. :)

Updated:

Matt’s Review

I've used Comments+ with Disqus throughout autechheads.com, and it's fantastic - virtually seamless. I've switched off the comments provided with other modules because this does such a good job.

The SEO functionality is great, and the Active Social integration is a real winner. Unified comments throughout the site is great for a lot of reasons, and this one is definitely worth it. The implementation makes it easy to add comment counts using the Disqus javascript snippets.

I'm already a fan of SunBlogNuke and this is yet another great module that I'm thrilled with! :-)

Thanks a lot for Matt's review. If you are interested in this awesome module, please order it with the Snowcovered link - Ultra Comments+.

Please note, this solution should work well in DNN Standard Blog Module 3.5.1 and SunBlogNuke 3.x and just tested in the above environment.

As mentioned previously on that post Ultimate DNN Blog Module – SunBlogNuke Roadmap, we are trying to develop the import feature for SunBlogNuke. I have seen multiple posts around our forum asking if there were any migration tool away from the core blog module and well now there is! In this blog post I want to share a SQL script needed to successfully migrate all blog posts from the core blog to the SunBlogNuke module.

Disclaimer

As with all other postings regarding database modifications to DotNetNuke, I am not responsible for any errors that might occur by executing the below scripts on your site. I have tested and used the below scripts however due to the vast differences in DotNetNuke installations you must not only follow my instructions but also perform sanity checks on the datasets to ensure that your setup doesn't require modifications to this process.

What does it do?

Please note, that once your run this THERE IS NO TURNING BACK; BACKUP YOUR DATABASE, PRIOR to executing this script in order to avoid any data loss.

In order to provide you with a transparent view of what the script really does to your data, I will outline a step-by-step execution path that it takes to wipe the slate clean and begin the process of the transforming your blog to the new blogging platform – SunBlogNuke paradigm:

INSERTS any existing user INTO the BlogUsers for a given blog and assigns it as default BlogOwner.

INSERTS any existing Child Blogs INTO the CATEGORIES table (The Child Blog’s title becomes the title of the new category).

COPIES any existing POSTS into the ENTRIES table of new Blogging module.

REFERENCES any existing POSTS found under the child blogs TO the newly created CATEGORY.

COPIES any existing COMMENTS into the COMMENTS table of new Blogging module.

How to run the script:

Before you begin, locate the BlogId of the blog you want to upgrade and the BlogId of the destination blog:

At the top of the script, set the value of @SourceBlogID to the ID of your dnn core blog and the value of @DestinationBlogID to the ID of new SunBlogNuke blog.

Save this script on your local machine using a descriptive name for example "CoreBlogToSunBlogNuke_Convertion.sql”

Log into your site using your HOST account

Navigate to HOST > SQL

Choose the file you saved using the "Browse" button

Select "Run as script"

Execute the SQL

At this point, all entries of your blog on your portal are now completely converted to SunBlogNuke – and once again, there is NO GOING BACK, unless you want to restore your database, of course.

What’s next?

Simple: automate this process and make it as a built-in feature into SunBlogNuke.

We realize that this manual process is not ideal, but we simply did not get a chance to automate it yet; the bright side of it is that it forced me to write this detailed blog post which reveals exactly what goes on during the upgrade. We hope to include the automated process in our next Building round – oh yeah, we’re planning on more of those.

Finally, we need you to help us test also. Testing this scenario is extremely important to the success of this major release, and we want to ensure that we get it right the first time!

Conclusion and Parting Thoughts

The above information should allow you to migrate your blog data to the SunBlogNuke module via a fairly easy to follow scripting process. I would like to simply remind everyone again that you MUST sanity check these scripts and the data that they will be inserting PRIOR to actually inserting the records into your database. As with all data operations there are risks of damage to the database if you incorrectly insert/update data, therefore I fully recommend taking backup of your database prior to performing any updates.

Please provide any feedback regarding this process below and feel free to use the forums for script assistance if needed!

You may download a SQL file with the above scripts by clicking here.

The SunBlogNuke Team

Recently some client of our DNN blog module requested a customized feature, he wanted to out the posted time of SunBlogNuke in a format that included the two letter suffix added to the day number, like "December 25th, 2009" as opposed to "December 25, 2009". After some investigation, it seems this is not supported out of the box (not surprising really). Finally I found the MarkGwilliam’s post (How To Append 'st', 'nd', 'rd' or 'th' To Day Numbers in Dates) which provided a ".NET Framework friendly" to implement this behavior and therefore offers good reuse value and is intuitive for .NET developers to use. I thought that is what we want and then extended it in our customized way which allows SunBlogNuke developers to consume the code more easily and flexible. Now I shared the VB.Net Function below and hope it helps if you also have the similar requirement: Protected Function FormatPostedTimeWithDayNumberSuffix(Optional ByVal format As String = "MMMM d{0}, yyyy") As Str ...
